FAQs

Program & Organization info

How do we choose our program locations?

In order to make sure that we are truly serving the needs of the communities we work with, CWB – USA only goes where it’s invited. In fact, that’s true for all 15 CWB chapters around the world. After receiving an invitation, CWB – USA shapes programming in collaboration with the inviting organization, and then determines how to fund the program and bring it to life.

How does CWB – USA define a “conflict zone”?

CWB – USA’s definition of a conflict zone is based on that given by the inviting organization. Depending on where our project is, we might work with survivors of domestic violence in inner-city Dallas, or people living in the West Bank who have just lost their homes to a settlement, or people who lived through a hurricane. The type of crisis varies, depending on the experiences of the people living through it and the global circumstances that created the crisis in the first place.

How does CWB do so much with so little?

The vast majority of our funding, 85 percent, comes from individual donors with an average one-time donation of about $60. We have generous honorary board members who give more, along with a cadre of generous artists who donate time…TONS of it!

We’re able to do so much with so little by receiving in-kind donations and the constant support of our volunteers, totaling around $200,000 a year worth of in-kind hours and effort. We build partnerships and participate in coalitions, sharing costs as they arise. Working with our partners and those that support our efforts, we’re able to put 95 percent of your generosity directly into the field.

Since we are entirely funded by donation, our annual budget does fluctuate from year to year. For more information about that, check out our GuideStar here. Learn more about how we broke down the costs of our 2016 project tour to El Salvador and our 2017  project tour to Haiti.

pssst– if you’ve already worked with us in some capacity, feel free to leave a review of your experience for other potential donors 🙂

Clowns Without Borders USA is a 501c-3 non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible.

Will CWB – USA support my social clowning project?

All CWB – USA projects collaborate with local organizations who have the on-the-ground support and network to make a project possible. We have collaborated on projects with Terre des Hommes, PLAN International, Save the Children, UNICEF, and many other organizations. We occasionally provide support/collaboration for social clowning projects initiated by other performers/performing organizations, but we usually don’t have much time or money to invest outside of our own projects.

If you would like to invite CWB – USA to collaborate on a project in your community, please email info@clownswithoutborders.org.

Will CWB – USA send performers to my event? What about guest speakers?

Unfortunately, sending performers is outside of the scope of the work that we do at CWB – USA.

If you are interested in booking CWB – USA to speak about our work and the importance of resilience through laughter, please email info@clownswithoutborders.org
